Vue on 30a Is Gone. Where Does the West End of 30A Watch the Sunset Over Dinner Now?

On September 14, Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club announced that Vue on 30a had served its last meal. The 4801 W County Hwy 30A address in Dune Allen has been a Gulf-front dining room since 1971, when the original Beach Club opened. For anyone living on the western end of Scenic Highway 30A, the loss is about more than one restaurant. It takes away the closest public table where dinner and a Gulf sunset happen in the same seat. The nearest replacements all sit farther east, and they offer two different things. One group gives you the Gulf from a deck or an upper floor. The other puts you right on it.

A building decision, not a restaurant decision

The club's explanation is mostly about the building. Routine maintenance led to a professional evaluation. That evaluation found water intrusion and related indoor air quality problems in parts of the structure. The club said the problems could be fixed, but only with a large investment and a long timeline. The building was already set to be replaced under the club's long-range master plan, so the board closed Vue for good instead of repairing it.

Steve O'Brien spoke for the club when 30a TV reported the closure:

"Vue has been so much more than a restaurant. It has been part of the fabric of this Club and this community for generations. While this is a bittersweet moment for our membership and the local community, prioritizing long-term safety and executing our master plan is the most responsible path forward for the club's future."

Every upcoming public reservation, private party, and scheduled event at Vue was canceled. Club management is contacting affected guests and hosts directly about refunds and other arrangements. If you had a fall celebration booked there and haven't heard anything, contact the club directly.

The gap is a stretch of road

Vue was public, on the Gulf, and served dinner, and it was located in Dune Allen. When we looked for another restaurant with all of those qualities between Dune Allen and Blue Mountain Beach, we found none. The verified options start at Gulf Place and run east through Grayton Beach, WaterColor, and Seaside.

They also fall into two groups. Some look out over the Gulf from a patio or a second floor across a beach access. Others sit right on the beachfront. In the table below, "Gulf view" and "Gulf-front" mean different things.

Restaurant Area Relationship to the Gulf Posted hours worth knowing
Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar, 1875 S. Hwy 393 Gulf Place Gulf view from the upper floor Dinner service listed
Shelby's Beach Bar & Grill, 37 Town Center Loop Gulf Place Patio overlooks Ed Walline beach access and the Gulf Daily, 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
CHIRINGO, 63 Hotz Ave. Grayton Beach Beachside, Gulf view Kitchen last orders 9 p.m., last seating 8:45 p.m.
Fish Out of Water, 34 Goldenrod Circle WaterColor Gulf-front October: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekends
Bud & Alley's, 2236 E. County Road 30-A Seaside Gulf-front, rooftop bar over the Gulf Rooftop listed daily 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seasonally

Most of these hours come from the restaurants' own pages or directory listings. Those pages can change from week to week in the shoulder season, so check before you drive.

Gulf Place: the closest, with the view from above

For Dune Allen and Blue Mountain Beach, Gulf Place at the foot of 393 is now the shortest trip to a public dinner table with a Gulf view. At Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar, the view comes from upstairs. The restaurant calls itself "Gulf View," and 30A.com's 2026 Gulf Place guide mentions the panoramic views from its upper floor. It also won 30A's 2026 Hot Spot award for outdoor dining in April, well before Vue closed.

Shelby's Beach Bar & Grill is around the corner on Town Center Loop. Its patio looks over Ed Walline Public Beach Access toward the Gulf. Its listing shows lunch and dinner daily, with an 8:30 p.m. close. That listing is undated, and an 8:30 p.m. close matters more as sunsets come earlier.

Neither place offered what Vue did, a dining room right on the sand. They come closest in distance, but the view is from a step back.

Grayton Beach: plan around the kitchen clock

CHIRINGO on Hotz Avenue is a beachside Gulf-view spot in Grayton. The restaurant also promotes Gulf-view events. The number to remember is the kitchen cutoff. Its posted hours run Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Monday through Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Even so, kitchen last orders are at 9 p.m. and the last seating is at 8:45 p.m. An 11 p.m. door close doesn't mean you can order a late dinner. If you plan a sunset meal there, the kitchen sets your schedule.

WaterColor and Seaside: where the dinner sits on the Gulf

To sit on the Gulf itself, the closest public options in our research are in WaterColor and Seaside.

Fish Out of Water at 34 Goldenrod Circle overlooks the Gulf and serves dinner, and the restaurant describes itself as gulf-front. Its hours change on October 1. The late-summer schedule that ends September 30 opens at 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The fall-break schedule for October 1 through 31 runs 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. That means longer hours all through October, with breakfast added on weekends.

Bud & Alley's in Seaside has a rooftop bar that looks over the Gulf and the sunset, plus a dinner menu and reservations downstairs. The rooftop is listed as open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. in season. The restaurant asks guests to call for current hours.

WaterColor Grill at 24 Goldenrod Circle has a Gulf view and an all-day menu from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Access is limited to WaterColor homeowners and WaterColor Inn or community guests, so it isn't open to the general public.

These spots are far from Dune Allen, and that is the real change. A Gulf-front dinner used to be minutes from home for anyone near Dune Allen. Now it is a drive east past Grayton.

October 20 is the next date on the calendar

Whether Dune Allen gets a beachfront dining room back depends on a plan the club hasn't finished. In April, the club's planning committee reported that Chris Meyers + Associates was only starting design concepts for Vue, the Beach Club, and nearby facilities. Members saw three preliminary designs at a July 16 town hall and then filled out a survey. On August 25, at a members-only session held at Vue, the architects presented one refined "Renovation Plan" concept, and the board shared cost estimates and funding scenarios. The club said that concept was not final.

The finished master plan is scheduled for the club's annual meeting on Tuesday, October 20. The club's own wording has also changed. The August notice called it a renovation plan, while the September closure announcement describes the building as slated for replacement. No public document we found explains the difference.

The April update listed questions members had raised. Those questions are the most useful guide to what the October plan may answer:

  • Whether a future beachfront venue serves the public, members only, or both
  • Whether the club renovates the existing structure or builds new

Our research didn't turn up a public construction start or finish date.

The club says updates on the master plan timeline and future beachfront concepts will be posted on its news portal. Until then, the closest public Gulf-front dinner for the west end of 30A is in WaterColor, and the closest Gulf-view tables are at Gulf Place.

At Compass & Key, we follow beachfront redevelopment like the plan for 4801 W County Hwy 30A closely, because projects like this shape a stretch of coast for decades. If you own property near Dune Allen and want help reading the October 20 plan once it's public, Let's Connect.
